The Biography of the writer, Yehudit Hendel.
                                       

 

Yehudit Hendel was born  to a religious family in Warsaw, Poland. In 1925, her grandfather sold all his possessions and immigrated with his sons and daughters to Israel. He settled in Tivon. Yehudit's father stayed in Warsaw till 1930, when he joined his family in Israel. He settled in Nesher, a workers' neighborhood near Haifa, a city which is mentioned a lot in Yehudit's stories.

 

Yehudit's family lived in a shaky wooden  house which bordered the Muslim cemetery in Haifa. Yehidit's mom died of typhus when Yehudit was young. Since then, the mother's character has been mentioned in all of Yehudit's stories and books.

 

Yehudit marries a painter, Zvi Meiroviz, in 1948. He was one of the leading painters in Israel, then. They had two children. In April, 1971, Zvi had a stroke which caused him partial paralysis. Yehudit dedicated her life to helping her husband paint with his left hand. In November, 1974, her husband died. Yehudit, who was engaged in writing a novel at that time , decided never to publish it.

 

Yehudit moved to Tel Aviv in 1980. She lives on her own and she still writes. It is worth noting that the best of her books were written when she was lonely, carrying the burden of providing for her family .

 

Yehudit started to write when she was very young. When she was in high school she wrote a novel about life in Haifa during the British Mandate. She published stories in magazines. Until today, Yehudit has published nine books of novels, short stories and a journey log of her trip to Poland.

 

Yehudit's books are taught in many Universities and High schools in Israel and abroad. Her stories were tanslated into many languages such as Hindi, Russian, Hungarian, French, English, Italian and many more.
